Difference Between Black and Galvanized Pipe

Mar. 08, 2021

Black vs Galvanised Pipes

Houses need gas and water to function comfortably. Natural gas provides heat and fire to cook food and without water, we cannot survive. Pipes are used to transporting these basic materials to houses, buildings and other construction projects to carry or deliver gas and water to meet their needs. The two most widely used types of pipe are black pipe and galvanised steel pipe.

Black pipe

Black pipe, also known as steel pipe, is used to transport water and natural gas from its source to the end-user. It is the pipe used by businesses and households to transport natural gas or propane.

Due to its strong heat resistance, it is also used in fire sprinkler systems. Black pipe is also used for the transfer of heating and cooling water to heat exchangers. It is usually joined together by welding or using mechanical couplings.

Although it is mainly used for gas lines, it is also used to connect equipment to their supply lines. In drainage, heating and gas pipes, black pipes are used. It can even be used in place of galvanised pipe in projects other than carrying drinking water.

Galvanized Steel Pipes

Galvanised pipe

A galvanised pipe is a steel pipe covered with zinc. Zinc increases the life expectancy of the pipe and makes it more resistant to corrosion and mineral deposits in the pipeline. It is a piping material used for water lines and has been used in homes for over 30 years.

It cannot be used for gas lines as the zinc will clog the line when it starts to flake off, but it has many other uses. It can also be used for outdoor railings, scaffolding, fencing, sewage pipes and farm irrigation and is best suited to large construction projects with a life expectancy of 40 years.

Although the zinc on galvanised pipe prevents corrosion, it corrodes more quickly than copper or PVC pipe. On top of this, it contains potentially harmful lead. It is also more expensive than the black pipe. The flaking of zinc in a galvanised pipe can cause the pipe to burst.

Although there are now safer, stronger pipes made from materials other than steel, black and galvanised pipes are still popular and have been used in homes and buildings.

The important thing to remember is to use them according to the specifications of your project and to use only one type of pipe to carry water or gas to your house. It is not recommended to combine both types of piping material.

Summary

1. Black pipe is made of steel just like the galvanised pipe. The difference is that galvanised pipes are coated with zinc, whereas black pipes are not.

2. Black pipe is best used for gas lines rather than water lines as it is prone to rust, whereas galvanised pipe is a safer pipe to use in water lines, but not for transporting gas.

3. Black pipe is cheaper than a galvanised pipe because of the zinc added to the galvanised pipe.
